Is that Yahwehs? I never encountered anyone like that personally no. I have evangelical friends, Pentecostal, but religion rarely comes up.

When I took the train, back in the early 90s, there was a group downtown, I think they were Yahwehs, distributing a lot of anti-Semitic literature. They were really mean and angry looking. They wore the Magen David sewn on their clothes. They had megaphones and shouted about everyone, not just the Jews. There were cops around, but it was still disturbing.

There are some true whackodoodles like the Black Hebrew Israelite groups, Nation of Yahweh and other imitation-Jews. Luckily, their numbers are small, though they are composed of showbiz-y loudmouths, usually bigoted, stupid men with narrow, repressive views of everything and everybody.

Real charmers.

Their forebears were covered in a 40’s classic of Black Religious Studies, Black Gods of the Metropolis. The NOI came out of this millieu.
