It is hard to hold an objective and differentiated view of something so close to our identity, but yes, not everybody who fought for the south was a slaveholding racist bastard and not everyone who fought for the union was a noble abolitionist.

sure, but some things are best relegated to the trash heap of history. nothing from the Confederacy is precious enough to hold dear, and thus dilute the evil it represented.
