Possibly because the original gloating about “Oh, yeah, there really WERE Soviet spies!” kinda lost its luster when it turned out that Joe McCarthy was still full of shit for most of his claims. And that his Red-hunting circuses we’re still basically an ego/power trip.

What pisses me off about the Red Scare is how people were hounded for having had Red sympathies in the 30’s and WWII years. I’m sorry. I’m no apologist for Stalinism but I get why some people may have been fascinated by our Red ally during WWII and definitely by communism when it seemed that capitalism had failed in the days before the New Deal. And likewise, it’s also why I don’t have any respect for conservative entertainers who complain about being “blacklisted” for their views when conservative actors at that time like Reagan, Wayne, and others DID blacklist people for being leftists.
