Oh for the love of Mike: the Crusades were bullshit. They were not justified. Stop trying.

The execution of the Crusades was cruel and awful, but a response to the aggression was necessary. Islamic armies conquered and occupied Spain, Rome was sacked, Constantinople was beseiged, Barbary pirates attacked shipping in the Mediterranean — all this before the First Crusade. Four centuries of aggression is, I think, enough justification for a counter-attack.
