Here’s another thought: If it is a Democrat symbol and Republicans are so resistant to it remaining up, then why didn’t they vote to take it down altogether in 2000? Why the compromise by which it came down from the state capital but remained padlocked on a pole within eyesight of the capital? Surely they can find the votes on that and show us that it was Democrats who voted to keep it around and set a 2/3 vote requirement for its removal, right?
