re: #449 palomino

Exactly, it’s just not the same game I watched as a kid. Think of the powerhouse Dolphins of the 70’s. They had two guys rush for 1000 yards and another for 500 one season. Almost unthinkable now. Griese was a good QB, but he rarely passed more than a dozen or so times a game.

A guy like Bradshaw would have a tough time making it today. Six TD’s and 24 INT’s his first season. But in the old PIT style game he was pretty good.

the passing game is more prolific now that ever…rule changes and the rise of huge, fast wideouts demands more vertical passing…hence O lines have become behemouth and passing is the new running…QB records have been shattered, not because Brees is a better QB than Staubach was…red zone offenses are far more complex than 30 years ago…4 and even 5 receivers at first and goal…the game is much faster, the rules favor the pass game and systems have just morphed with it…but non of that means shit if you cannot play action, cannot run screens out of the backfield or cannot slam the ball for a couple of yards….you MUST have an effective running game or the glamorous big play stuff will not be effective….it’s not about yards, it’s about carries to keep the D back to open up the middle of the field…elementary football
