There are some Charismatic/Neo-Pentecostals who do this appropriation of everything Jewish (based of course on their own views, having very little to do with actual Judaism.)

They’ll celebrate some Jewish holidays, purchase items from Israel, don tallitot when they pray, re-vamp their liturgical songs to sound vaguely Jerusalem-y, etc.

Often, they are CUFI types. I’ve known a lot of those types. They really resent Judaism unless it’s the sort practiced by their Messianic friends.

Wow. I never heard of them.

Reminded me of a story. Years ago, my boss had a client. Well-dressed man, handsome, tall and he wore a Magen David and a Cross around his neck. I thought he was probably a Jew for Jesus (I don’t think they call themselves that anymore) but anyway, I thought it curious.

One day we were standing at the elevator alone and I thought it was a perfect time to ask with no one around so i did! He explained his family was from Spain during the Inquisition and they converted to Catholicism, but kept the Jewish holidays in secret. Generations down the line, they still celebrate the holidays, eat Jewish foods, wear the Star, etc, but he said he was Catholic and goes to mass.

I thought it was so neat. How the fabric of people’s lives is woven.
