It requires some amount of personal responsibility to maintain it, and sadly some people view that as hard work.

Laziness is a problem.

The willingness to take responsibility is, I think, key.

You can hear it in the way that people talk about things

“My car hit the telephone poll” Versus “I hit the telephone poll with my car.”

A crude example. But I think it illustrates the point.

Just listening to people talk to each other can be disconcerting. The efforts that people take to avoid responsibility are staggering. Only people who can accept responsibility for their actions and choices are capable of being free. Those others are, as they prove by the language they use, incapable of choosing. They are just along for the ride.
