A tax return can take a few minutes, or it can take a longer amount of time, depending on your income and what you’re deducting.

If that’s a code for flat tax, then he’s just giving away the game. He’s all for shifting the tax burden even further on to those least able to afford it while providing a giveaway to the wealthy.

The whole reason that tax prep is a big industry is because Congress decided to provide all manner of carveouts and exceptions and deductions, and then left a lot up to the IRS to figure out how to make it work (like dealing with nonprofits that aren’t exactly nonprofit or are engaging in activities outside what a nonprofit should be).

The GOP is big on saying that they want to close loopholes, but are cagey about saying what they’re actually looking to do. And they wont go near changing anything having to do with capital gains because that’s one huge area where revenue could be generated (and where wealth accumulates because the wealthy can afford to invest still greater sums). And they continue to seek a repeal to the estate tax, which is yet another area where the wealthy are able to pass it on to their heirs unfettered, even though the tax kicks in for those with estates in excess of $5 million, which is a fraction of a percent of all taxpayers.
