He was a Sgt and had been serving for 2 years when they learned he had lied about his age and enlisted when he was 15.

I’m sure you already know the punch line of this question, but you know what a soldier or sailor carrying a flame thrower on his back was called?

A moving target.

That was the person snipers were looking out for the most.
