The thing I have never been able to understand about American politics is that everything thing is left vs right. Both parties have to pander to their extremes and they seem to take the center for granted. A center democrat and a center republican probably have more in common with each other than they do with the extreme elements of their respective parties.
That is probably never going to change as long as there are only two viable political parties.

That may be true. But there are those who are true conservatives.
