Well, as governor of California he saw the counterculture up close and personal. Given how much disruption it caused for no gain, he revulsion was well founded.

No gain? Oh I object to that. Women’s rights came out of the 60’s. So did many minority rights. The Peace Corp came out of the 60s. Not all hippies were screwing and smoking.
