re: #317 oaktree

I’ve read a number of versions of the Arthurian meme. Including some of the more science fiction-y ones that bring one or more of the characters into the modern day.

And there’s plenty of riffs done on it. T H White’s take was traditional for the most part, but the upbringing of Arthur is the good stuff (Once and Future King). The Mary Stewart trilogy is good as well with the focus on Merlin. Marion Zimmer Bradley did the feminist riff with _Mists of Avalon_, and essentially converted the usual villaness of the story into a much more complex person. Lawhead’s Pendragon Cycle centered more on a Roman/Christian set-up than a medieval one (arguably more accurate for the claimed time period.)

Even have a few books of Arthurian-centric short stories. Including a satire police procedural.

The Once And Future King is probably my absolute favorite. Parke Godwin did a really interesting novel about Guinevere after Arthur’s death, which I highly recommend.
