Well you do that, but I think that anybody who’s proposal is “slash every line item by 10%” doesn’t know what the hell they’re talking about. If such a simplistic plan were ever actually implemented, it would lead to power shutdowns in hospitals, buildings burning to the ground without fire protection and all sorts of hell breaking loose. The fact is, there are some things (in fact, most things) that simply don’t have a 10% margin you can just chop right out of it. Some of those things are more important than others.

That’s absolutely correct.
I worked for state gov’t.
And this is always how they try to cut the budget.
“We must do more with less!” is the battle cry.

And of course it doesn’t work that way. There are programs that could be cut altogether, and they should be. There are programs that need more money to run effectively right now, and they should get it.

But woe be unto the legislator that tries to cut something somewhere in his district that’s important to somebody important.
