A lot of dramatic license especially with McQueen but as I said it’s fun and as you say it’s actually quite historical accurate with the events, just the characters take on attributes of real people combined. IF I recall, the real Tunnel King was a Canadian mining engineer. And the three guys who did get out were Norweigan and Dutch.

The background essentials about the camp and mechanics of the escape were correct. The characters and some of the details, especially McQueen’s, are fictional.

I recall from one book that there was a camp inmate reunion in the 50s or 60s that one or more of the “ferrets” (German guards who specialized in finding hidden items) attended.
