My part in the slave trade was pretty limited—to an Irishman who was dragooned into a Pennsylvania artillery unit and lobbed a couple 12 pounders in the general direction of some slaveowner’s poor stooges.

The big debate in my family is whether my one Southern ancestor who was arrested (but not tried) for selling defective wheels to the Confederates is a hero who did that deliberately or just a con-man, which we have plenty of in the family tree.
