Do you have an “urban forester?” They have one in Denver. Municipalities are always going gaga for trees yet they don’t seem to understand that they require water and maintenance. In my case I’ve put trees 5 feet away from easement lines and as you mentioned the roots grow to the same size as the spread. That means something with a 50 foot spread will be 45 feet into an easement that’s 5 feet away. But, they want that tree count. Astonishingly enough they don’t even consider native vegetation. It’s like planting a maple tree in Phoenix sometimes — better yet make that a cedar tree.
