Most people in the US today (save for the most recent immigrant families) have at least some ancestry going back to the early days of settlement and many surprises wait in store for them if they ever get into ancestry research (a pointless exercise, imho).
Many will find ancestors and ties to both sides of that hideous conflict and to both sides of the slavery ownership question. We’re a mixed bunch.

Just wait until they get their DNA analyzed and find out they are genetically tied to both sides of the slavery ownership question. We’re a mixed bunch.
