Sex means sexual intercourse.

That’s a very misleading statement. Yes, it can mean that but the more common and primary meaning when referencing an activity with sex is any sexual activity, not just intercourse. Take up a dictionary.

Narrowing the meaning to sexual intercourse is just a way to attempt to get away with nitty gritty without calling it by its appropriate umbrella term.
