From the sounds of it, the military hasn’t really considered desertion during the GWOT worth prosecuting. Something on the order of 8,000 troops deserted between the start of the Second Iraq War and 2005, and the most they got was a slap on the wrist.

I had no idea.

Clearly I am not alone there.
