If I tried that, he’d sit and whine all night. I’ve done it once or twice on nights when he was being particularly nettlesome and he whined the whole time making it just as hard to sleep.

That’s why they actually get shut out at a door about 15 feet from the door to our bedroom. In general, we can sleep through any whining at that distance. (There doesn’t tend to be a lot anymore, unless mr. klys forgot to refill the timed feeders. We’ve been doing this for years because otherwise Problem Child likes to eat our hair as we sleep.)
