Nobody actually likes Romney, so he’s got little margin for error. If he picks the wrong VP, he’s toast if you don’t presume he’s already toast. If he doesn’t pick a TPer/Bible thumper/culture warrior then he loses a lot the base. If he does pick that kind of VP he loses a lot of independents. If Sarah Palin proved anything, it’s that VP picks matter today. The economy will be the biggest issue overall, but the base of the GOP has shown no signs of easing up on cultural issues and cultural resentments. At some point no matter how long he is able to avoid it, Romney will have to prove that he is “one of them” and so will his VP candidate.

I think that’s pretty spot on. It will also be interesting to see what happens with Governor’s races and if the Republican lose the House. They’ve really made a huge mess out of their opportunity and it could cost them big time.
