I still remember the mandatory ‘DUCK AND COVER” drills we had to do in school every 3 months.

They even had a drill in Mom’s old church, in the middle of the service everyone had to go to the fallout shelter in the basement and seal it off

And the black flash curtains on the schoolroom windows. Then they were supposed to load us into school busses (FY, SpellCheck, “busses” is correct) and race the shockwave up to fucking Goldbar, with little tickets strung around our necks on manila twine so they could identify our bodies.

We lived three blocks away—my mom told me to just sneak away and come home….
