Well here’s the thing about that. Romney can play to the center by avoiding IA and SC and even get the nomination doing so, but the base of the GOP has not and will not let up on the culture wars or their cultural resentments. Eventually Romney will have to state unequivocally whether or not he is with them on those issue because these are the issue that are most important to them. The economy is the overall most important issues for independents who haven’t made up their minds or are still susceptible to changing their minds, but not for the GOP base. He can’t play to the center forever, the base won’t allow it and he won’t be able to placate them and the rest of the country not see it or hear it. John McCain couldn’t pull it off and he’s was a much better and more likable candidate back in 2008.
