Christ commanded us to go out and teach the Gospel. However, I can find no scripture where he said He wanted us to use the power of the government to do so, to force others to listen.

Agree 100%, and the founding fathers of this country knew what a mess mixing religion and government made and were sure to put protections against allowing that mix into the Constitution.
