Moderate Muslims are at a significant disadvantage vis a vis the extremists, who by their very nature are more volatile.
The extremists are awash in money, including Saudi, so they can take over a Mosque.
Add to that a big safety issue, moderates are not likely to do violence to an extremist , but the inverse is not true.

Also, I would point out that moderate Muslims do run into peculiar roadblocks—I would point to the lady Muslim scholar who wrote an article about how she believed wearing the hijab was optional, only to be told by Robert Spencer, of all people, that she did not understand Islam.

Some folks will do anything not to have to take ‘yes’ for an answer.
