I think I have seen this explanation before but I forget. What is this G-d spelling for?

I thought it was god(s).

The dash? It’s a respectful thing. Others see it as a form of blasphemy. G-d’s names should never be written on a piece of paper where it can be destroyed, but actually I think that would be closer to the Hebrew name, not the G word, but even so, the habit of not actually spelling it took form.
