I scored a cool coin from the 12th Century…It looks Middle Eastern…

Ancient Islamic coins are one of the most under collected area in ancient coin collecting. You would be amazed at the lower prices for Islamic coins than their European counterparts.

That’s mainly because they are SO difficult to attribute. Barely no icongraphy (sp?), the script is regional and changes with tribes and the physical condition varies a lot.

Bottom line, it takes a whole lot of study to understand what’s on a Islamic coin, and that has made demand low.

So, if you want a less expensive ancient coin area to get into, that’s it. There are some really good books on the subject, but bottom line, it takes a lot of study. More than most arm chair collectors want to do.
