But then these comparisons are silly. You can take any government expenditure and see how far it would have gotten in humanitarian aid terms instead. I used to hear it as a kid about the Apollo program.

These same tax monies would have been spend on different military needs if we were not at war at all. Or spend somewhere else by congress. Is there good reason to think any of the things you listed would have happened instead?
