One of the reasons I only use cash. My wife and I bought our new car and our house with saved money and no credit. If we don’t borrow, lenders don’t own our souls.

I will point out that it’s possible to use things like credit cards and not go into debt. The credit card companies may not be all that fond of people who use them that way, but it is legal.

Whether buying a house with a mortgage is the right decision I leave up to each person to make for themselves. It worked out for us. We are, however, rather more financially disciplined than I think the average American is.
