Lynching is odious. Shooting young black men on a bare suspicion is odious. But the descriptions of actual lynchings in the article (and they are only the mildest hint at what lynching really was) make it clear that the comparison is not apt.

The police rate black lives far too low, but I don’t believe they are pursuing a deliberate terror campaign. And I’ve never heard of their inviting the community to bring the kids and the picnic baskets to watch.
