Despite pushback, legislator expects teacher license proposal to stick

A lawmaker behind a proposal to allow people to teach “non-core” subjects in Wisconsin secondary schools without a bachelor’s degree, and core subjects like English with no teacher training, said she believes the proposal will stick in the state budget bill despite pushback the idea has attracted.

But Rep. Mary Czaja (R-Irma) said she intends to modify her proposal to require anyone hired without a bachelor’s degree to have at least a high school diploma, and that any teachers hired through her new pathway could only work part-time, with no benefits.
