The article has been revised on Fox 2 ‘s web site to reflect a reply from Congressman Akin (Fox 2 is the local Fox Broadcasting affiliate in St. Louis):

ST. LOUIS, MO (KTVI)– Republican Congressman Todd Akin said Friday afternoon he thinks it’s time for a second look at federal “civil rights and voting rights” laws.

The republican U.S. senate candidate told FOX 2’s Charles Jaco states not the federal government should set voter rules.

Congressman Akin of course is trying to unseat democratic Senator Claire McCaskill. And Akin has always said the federal government’s role should be much smaller than it is.

Other conservatives have also said the voting rights act should get another look. You can see our entire conversation with Congressman Akin on the Jaco report at 8:30 Sunday morning on FOX 2.

Statement from Congressman Todd Akin:

“Congressman Todd Akin believes that the right to vote is fundamental to our country. He supports laws that protect these rights and did not say that he was opposed to the ‘civil rights and voting rights’ laws. Akin has, and always will, support the right to vote.”
