The wood rounds are sometimes called knee-knockers. They’re fired by someone and are supposed to bounce off the ground first before hitting someone in the lower leg - enough to hurt, but not enough to cause permanent damage.

Rubber bullets have different range characteristics, but are supposed to be nonlethal (even though there are incidents of use that have indeed led to deaths).
