Took my son to Star Trek Beyond today. It’s a very action oriented tale for the series and yet there are a number of very surprising introspective and philosophical moments in it. I can’t say much as spoilers would ruin it badly. Suffice to say, if you like this version of Star Trek, this is probably the best so far.

8.5 out of 10 as a gut response right now. A little too lightweight but better than some of the worst efforts of the past (Final Frontier anyone? Ugh… though Shatner had the one line that saved the mess.) Rather reminds me of Day of the Dove in some respects.

As an aside, JJ has said Chekov will not be recast. Not sure what that means for movie 4 that was just approved but I think that’s the best possible option for the Star Trek of the Nero timeline.

If your a Star Trek fan or Geek in general, see it. It’s worth the money for the big screen - the first time I’ve said that in way too long.
