Back in the days of South African apartheid, the SA consulate office in Glasgow was located not far from George Square, the city’s main square and home to the city council. The council passed a resolution renaming the small square facing the SA consulate Nelson Mandela Square. The SA consular attache suggested they might move elsewhere, the council made it clear to them that anywhere the consulate might relocate in the city their postal address would begin “Nelson Mandela”. The consular attache gave in.
