I had a Zune briefly in between the Zen Vision I had and my iPod. I got it for $70 off a refurb site, it was an astounding deal for a 30GB player, worked well, nice interface, not too fancy, then it got stolen :(

Also i kept having trouble with the Zune software. It’s ALWAYS THE STUPID PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE :(

Zune beats iPod by a mile. Why? Because while they both require the proprietary software, you have to jigger with the iPod to play any MP3s you might have downloaded from other sources. Zune? So long as there’s no DRMs on the MP3, it’ll recognize it, sync it, and find album art for it.
