It’s possible that most people don’t have the time, inclination, or ability to fact check (or fact check the checkers) to see who was more accurate in their statement of issues, facts, and rebuttals, so they’re left with focusing on who they felt did better on style points.

But if you do too good, then you come off as being slick and rehearsed (a criticism I saw in dealing with law school debates/competitions).
