Denial thrives on the mainstream’s mistakes. The “lampshades”, the “Jewish soap” and the like, which became symbolic despite being legends, and which have nothing to do with the core of the Holocaust as such when you think about it, also became the denier icons.

It’s the same like creationists aka evolution deniers feed on the mainstream science’s mistakes, and hence you have the “icons” like Haeckel’s embryos or the Piltdown man. Which are pretty pathetic examples, but nevertheless real fuck-ups. I mean, I was taught the embryos/”biogenetic law” bullshit in school too.
