The police version, and what the witnesses claim to have happened are almost diametrically opposed to each other. Until we get to know more - whether it’s video shot by bystanders, other forensic evidence, etc., there’s no way to know for sure exactly what happened and precipitated the death.

All we know for certain is that Brown was unarmed when he was killed. Police do have leeway to use deadly force even when a person is unarmed, and the courts (up to and including the Supreme Court) have given deference to police on this point.
