The beginning of Battle Cry of Freedom talks about the Mexican American war to show how many of the leaders on both sides of the Civil War had served together. The Southern army wasn’t really an insurgency.

On the other hand, I expect them to bring up the American Revolution. They think the insurgency won, but the colonies weren’t winning until the fighters became an actual army.
