And self-driving cars will have even tighter reviews.
People panicking about them also greatly underestimate how buggy human drivers are.
The brain did not evolve with operating heavy machinery in mind.

I had to write a library for creating and parsing messages for communicating between two platforms. That was probably my best tested piece of code ever: my test harness would generate a random message, record how it generated it, then parse it, and verify that the results matched what I expected. Then I ran this nearly 100K times.

Edit: The point of that paragraph was to try to say that I suspect the testing on car software will involve way more testing and simulation than a browser.

There’s a reason that we’ve only seen braking and parallel parking so far from cars. They know they have to take it slow and get it right. Personally, I think the sooner we stop people from actually driving, the safer it will be. I suspect that we will release self driving cars later than we could because of people’s fears. The capabilities in these cars will surpass humans in safety long before we release them, but there will be resistance.
