Er, how so? Many on the ‘right-wing’ want the government to intervene in all sorts of ways to prevent the child from being exposed to various influences.

I don’t think they particularly want the government to intervene as much as they want the power, as parents, to decide what their kids are exposed to. Maybe I’m getting a bit too clever there, I admit.

I just think that, psychologically, a large part of the “free market/low tax” ethos stems from the idea that I, as an individual, should be able to decide how to dispose of the fruit of my achievements, which is very often expressed as a parent-child transfer.

Whereas, equally, a large part of the “shared resources/redistribution” ethos stems from the idea that poor and vulnerable individuals should be protected and nurtured regardless of their circumstances, which is often expressed as looking out for at-risk children.
