I’m really struggling with that. I grew up with Officer Friendly and always had utmost respect for police and the very tough job they do. They put their lives on the line to protect me. Then I see Rodney King, pepper spraying sitting students, modified choke holds for selling cigarettes illegally, shooting unarmed kids, etc, etc, etc. And my inner voice becomes nothing but noisy contrasts in my head.

We decided that more police = better police protection, not thinking that quantity does not necessarily guarantee quality, and that a few corrupt, poorly trained or thuggish officers can undo the work of a lot of good, conscientious policemen.
