Religion is unique in its ability to gather willing and zealous adherents. And, no humans are not inherently irrational any more than they are rational, both need to be developed. Without religion, although the inherent tribalism that is in humans cannot be removed, it can be redirected more easily. Note the lack of absolutes in my comment.
