Also: if you had ANY balance still owing on your card, they should have sent you a statement for the next period (after paying it off), even if it was only for one cent. Unless, say, you moved and didn’t give Discover a forwarding address, there’s no excuse for them not to have dunned you for the “balance” right away.

You might also check with your State, if they have something like a Consumer Protection Department (or whatevs) - here in New York the State CPB is pretty good about standing up for consumers - especially with bank and credit-card stuff. But then, this is a more-or-less civilzed part of the country….
