This raises once again the whole question of when does a fetus gain “personhood”, or in other terms, granted “rights” as recognized by society.

I’m fairly comfortable with the current arrangement regarding abortions. Some may disagree, but I do think that there is a transition when the unborn are indeed “human” enough to be granted rights of a sort. It’s a grey transition, somewhere around the end of the second trimester.

No matter the age of the fetus, there will be times when the choices are:

—Woman or fetus dies?

—Fetus dies, or woman will be injured and unable to bear any more children in the future?

—Fetus dies, or woman might die, might not.

—Fetus will harm woman, and die before reaching 6 months, or fetus dies now, woman is unharmed?

What I’m trying to say is that it never is about the age of the fetus. It’s about who decides. And the fetus never decides, it can’t. That leaves the woman. When do you think it’s ok to tell her it’s not her decision?

And I have to sign off, but will probably be back at some point.
