With the Scotts Mills quake, it was a little after 0530 in the morning - the neighbor’s dog was howling and that woke me up. I looked out the window, and noticed it pawing at the ground. Then dead silence - no birds, nothing, followed by a sound like low thunder and then the shock wave hit.
It was pretty strong in terms of intensity. Not just the typical horizontal motion, but vertical motion as well.
