Um, why does that matter? Why do people start sentences that way? A bit condescending, isn’t it?

I think that in my original questioning of Twain’s statement I made the mistake of using the word “admit” rather than “say”, which changes the sentiment of what I said and more accurately reflects what what I meant.

Sharmuta brought up a point about fear that helped me to understand the quote better. I’m happy to drop it at this point.
