This time of year fresh tomatoes are pretty cheap. Even cheaper if you grow them yourself.

While my home grown tomatos are always better tasting I hesitate to claim they are cheaper than canned. By the time I figure in the cost of manure, gas for the tiller, hours of labor, water and bug dust they are probably more expensive per pound than ground beef.
